All the world’s major religions, with their emphasis on love, compassion, patience, tolerance, and forgiveness can do and do promote inner values. But the reality of the world today is that grounding ethics in religion is no longer adequate. This is why I am increasingly convinced that the time has come to find a way of thinking about spirituality and ethics beyond religions altogether.
There will be a day when people say, “I am human, and that is why I act as I do.”
Not, I am a “Christian,” “Muslim,” “Jew,” “Buddhist,” etc.
Humanity first. All the other stuff — the rules that are not rules, the laws that are defunked and debunked, the ideas that aren’t carrying weight in normal discourse — those things can go away.
Humanity first, means there’s no more worry over what the dusty old books say, but what modernity teaches.
Civilization isn’t going to take a nose dive if religions — and people of faith — stop screaming about their views, because they’ve been around the longest.
Humanity first.
