I did some event photography this week. Looking through the images, I noticed a good example of how a flash with diffusion can help make people look better. In the example, there are four photographs taken in succession. The flash fired every other frame. It does this as the batteries start to die. I could photoshop a little fill on the dark side of this person’s face, but it’s not going to remedy the natural aging process.
Pay specific attention to the circles under her eyes, the wrinkles around the eyes and nose, and just the all around smoothness of her skin from one image to the next.
It’s not going to be perfect, by any means, but not using a flash with diffusion ages a person 10 years or more. It doesn’t have to be direct flash either. It can be redirected up. Just a little diffusion on a subject can be all the difference between a good and bad photograph.
