McCain strategist: Palin thought candidacy was mapped by God

You can read this article here in which McCain’s chief campaign strategist Steve Schmidt talks about working with Sarah Palin during the last election. She described her shoulder tap as a part of “god’s plan”.

He also said, “There were numerous instances that she said things that were — that were not accurate that, ultimately, the campaign had to deal with. And that opened the door to criticism that she was being untruthful and inaccurate. And I think that that is something that continues to this day.”

What I like about Schmidt is that you can see his trying to be kind about the criticism, because the criticism alone speaks volumes. He stuttered through it, because I’m sure he has an allegiance to the good and decent republicans.

I continue to be dumbstruck by the sheer number of followers Palin seems to keep despite her incredible ability to appear not so intelligent even when religious TV and FOX give her the platform.

“It’s Part of god’s plan” is a cliché statement used heavily among the religious. It has been used in attempts to convince me of heaven’s hand in my day-to-day affairs.

It’s a cruel statement really. If god’s hand is helping me along, then it should be recognized that it’s god’s hand — or lack thereof — preventing unknown millions from successes. It’s a brutal notion.

The frequent metaphor for god is that he’s parental. Surely this deified sky parent doesn’t play favorites. And if he did, what prevents him from treating all his children equally? Satan? Really? God beats down the devil in some instances, but not all the time, that would be too hard.

Another way to view this is, if it was god’s plan to choose Palin, then it was also god’s plan for Palin and McCain to lose. Hell, if you believe it was god’s plan in the sense of the biblical character Job, all the contraversies surronding Palin are okayed and given by god. Thank god for her granddaughter’s father!

It was god’s plan for Obama to win the election, and all god’s followers should stop hating on god’s decisions. God smiled on Obama, only his followers are the ones with the kvetching mouths. Wow, that sure is reminiscent of the believers in the Hebrew bible. Oh, if they could only learn from their own mistakes that they teach children in Sunday School.
