February self portrait, theme: newspaper

february_self_portrait_2014-1

You may remember that I’m doing a twelve-month, self-portrait project with friend and photographer Sunny Lee, the same person who started the Peeper Dee project of 2012.

The rules are that we are to complete a self portrait every month, delivered on the 15th of that month, with a particular theme that we come up with. This month’s theme was newspaper.

And I get an F, because my submission is three days late.

My original idea was more of a composite in which the plates I took were to be used to dictate a studio photographed portrait.

I was flu-ish all last weekend, preventing me from shooting or feeling like shooting at all. Once I found out that we were going to have a few inches of snow yesterday, I was excited that I could get my plate then roll over to our studio to pick up the studio shot. But the snow was horrendous and was causing a lot of awful conditions.

So I nixed the studio and did the shoot at a bus stop walking distance from my house. My buddy Ryan met me, because I had full on lighting setup, two cameras, and other gear. I didn’t want anyone running off with my shit.

The shot ended up being a composite anyway as I made the background a mix of about seven different photos.

I decided to go with black and white for delivery as it seemed to be reflective of the essence of newspaper’s legacy, but I’ll put the color under the fold along with some outtakes.

Here’s Sunny Lee’s submission as well.

“Lord, why do you pile all these troubles upon us? It’s because of the gays, isn’t it? Yes, it is. I knew it. You’re punishing us for their abominations. Oh, no no no, not at all. I’m punishing you for the shitty way you treating them.photo 2
